American Wheelchair Football – A new diability sport in the UK
I have been waiting for almost 2 years since connecting with Gee Griffoths of the American Wheelchair football in bringing it to the UK to showcase in the Invictus Games in Birmingham 2027.
There were two training sessions being held this weekend a local one in Birmingham and the main event in Nottingham.
Almost all the people in the photos are new to this sport and some simple drills were done, eg throwing the ball, catching, turning around fast, tactics and various other moves that need to be learnt before a game is ever played.
I just tried to get some action shots with the new kids on the block, it is hard when they are still trying how to play with a ball in a moving wheelchair, the coordination needed seems complicated at first, but the more times you do this the more natural it becomes and hopefully within a year they are ready for a match as they for now just practice once a month.
So who can play on the Saturday sessions in Birmingham anyone for the Session of American Wheelchair Football, the aim is to ask any Military and Emergency Service worker who has been injured and can be classified as disabled can join in. They are looking for around 30 players so they can play each other at the Invictus games as a big Introduction to the Sport and by then they hope to have teams up and down the country and eventually form a proper league and have regular tournaments.
