Trading Pins at the Paralympics

As the Paralympics approach, I’ve been watching various athletes on TikTok showing off their gear for the upcoming days. At the end of their posts, they often display the “country pins” and other pins, like those from Instagram, that they are exchanging with other athletes. Over the two-week period, it’s been fascinating to see how their lanyards have gradually become filled with a wide variety of pins through these trades.

During the International Blind Games, I received a pin from the Colombian blind football team as a token of appreciation for a favor I did for them. I also earned a “London Legend” pin by donating at least £100 to the London Air Ambulance, which came with a certificate of recognition.

This idea sparked a thought: why not trade pins? It’s a unique way to break the ice and stand out as a photographer. While business cards are useful, this could be a far more impactful approach, especially at what might be my top marketing event of the year. I’ll be meeting a wide array of people, including athletes and representatives from various organizations. Instead of just handing out a business card, I’ll be giving out a single pin, packaged in a small plastic bag, to leave a lasting impression.

I recently found a supplier and ordered 50 plastic pins, complete with a backing to attach them to a lanyard. Unfortunately, it was too late to go with a metal option. Then, last Friday, I spoke with a contact who suggested that their wheelchair rugby/basketball team mounts these pins on a piece of card and either gives or sells them that way. I thought that was a great idea! I decided to enhance the concept by incorporating some of my photography. After about two hours and several trial prints, I came up with a design I’m happy with. Inspired by this chat, I ordered an additional 50 pins, bringing the total to 100. I’ll have them ready for trading..

It is mounted on a piece of photo paper approx 3.5″ x 5″ so this changes the way people see me, I am not an athlete, but a photographer.

As you may have noticed, I’ve named this “Collector Pin No. 1.” Many of you may be wondering if you can buy this pin. For now, these pins are exclusive to the Paralympic Games. However, based on demand, I have ideas for additional designs. I’d love to hear your thoughts on what themes you’d like to see featured. Each pin will showcase a mini photo, and the Paralympics will likely be the focus of the first batch. Feel free to email me with your suggestions! (Please note that pricing details are not yet available.)

When I go to events around the world including the UK, I will be bringing a few each time, ideally, you have something similar to trade with me.

Thank you

Michael
