Supporting Grassroots Judo for Children with Autism

I recently had the privilege of visiting Metro Judo Club, a wonderful organisation based in the Greenwich area that runs Judo classes for children with autism. From what I observed, the kids were fully engaged and clearly enjoying themselves. The sessions are run by experienced, qualified instructors who guide the children through a range of exercises—helping them focus beyond their condition and immerse themselves in learning new skills.

Training begins with basic movements and gradually builds up to techniques like how to land safely, grip the tunic, and perform controlled throws. There were children with varying levels of autism and progress, but what really stood out was the instructors’ patience and care. They never raised their voices, always teaching gently and in manageable steps. I was genuinely impressed and inspired by the environment they’ve created.
